With innovations like tablet computers and tabletop stands, the market for digital photo frames is set for some hefty competition. Sony is prepared, however, with a new line of models that can play back high-definition video in addition to a slideshow of still images.
The new S-Frame DPF-XR100, DPF-VR100 can play back standard definition, as well as HD video in AVCHD format via a compatible memory card. They both have 10.2" WSVGA screens that have LED backlighting. Additional features include stereo audio, alarm clock, and Sweep Panorama playback for viewing panoroma images snapped with a Sony Cyber-shot camera. The ‘XR100 adds Sony's TruBlack technology, which helps to reduce reflection and enhance contrast.
The DPF-D830, which can only play back SD video, has an 8" LCD. But what sets this model apart is that it's also Sony's first that can operate on a built-in, rechargeable battery. On a full charge, it can run for up to 100 minutes (when viewing photos).
All three come with 2 GB of internal memory, with support for both JPEG and RAW image files, along with an auto-sizing feature that can resize images to maximize capacity. Each also comes with three music tracks loaded into it; users can also copy their own MP3 audio files to the frames. All boast typical digital photo frame features, like slide show variations, auto orientation sensors, memory card slots, USB slot (cable is optional), and index modes to view more than one photo at once. An auto power on/off setting can manage energy consumption; and an included remote affords the ability to operate it from afar.
In addition to these highlighted models, Sony has also released eight more, ranging from 7" to 10" in size, and from $80 to $240; and scheduled for availability between September and November. The DPP-F800 particularly stands out. The 8" frame has a 4 x 6" dye-sublimation photo printer built right into it. Supplementing the main line are the DPF-D720BU, DPF-D720BQ Limited Edition models that come decorated with Swarovski Elements.
