Global Mobile PC Shipments to Surpass 800M Units by 2017

According to the Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast report by NPD DisplaySearch, global mobile PC (tablets, laptops, etc.) shipments are forecasted to expand from 347 million units in 2012, to over 809 million units by 2017.

Tablets, of course will play a huge role in this, as NPD predicts that 416 million tablets will ship globally in 2017, versus 121 million units in 2012. The five-year compound annual growth rate for tablet shipments is projected to reach 28%, as a result of mature market growth. This market, says NPD, will account for at least 60% of tablet shipments between 2013 and 2017.

What's more, it's being predicted that tablet shipments into mature markets will grow from 80 million in 2012 to 254 million by 2017.

With tablet popularity growing, NPD sees the device's number of shipments surpassing that of notebooks by 2016.
