Pioneer Electronics Canada Inc. has introduced its new wireless, Wi-Fi music speaker systems, the SMA Series. The XW-SMA1 ($329), XW-SMA3 ($429) and XW-SMA4 ($429) will be available in Canada in August.
The SMA systems allows an individual with an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and computers running iTunes to connect to the speakers via AirPlay, for playback of music in a single room, or in a multi-speaker/multi-room setup.
In addition, the speakers offer DLNA 1.5 connectivity, which lets the user listen to music from his compatible networked devices, via an existing home network.
All three models also have Pioneer's Wireless Direct Technology, which allows the speaker to function as its own Wi-Fi wireless access point. With this, a home network is not required.
The XW-SMA1 features dual 3" speakers and a 3/4" soft dome tweeter and tuned bass reflex. Meanwhile, the XW-SMA3 has the same audio components as the aforementioned model, but also comes with a rechargeable Lithium Ion battery and a tough exterior. When the battery power is being used, music playback lasts up to four hours at maximum volume, and up to six hours at 50% volume.
The XW-SMA4 has five speakers, including dual 3" speakers, a dedicated 4" subwoofer and dual 3/4" soft dome tweeters.
Finally, customers will be able to stream audio files wireless from HTC One smartphones, directly to these speakers, as part of the HTC Connect Program. Pioneer says that it is the first CE manufacturer to receive HTC Connect certification. This feature will eventually be incorporated into a number of 2012 Pioneer and Elite branded AV receivers.
