The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) Customs & Excise Section has put the kybosh on a group of individuals that were allegedly involved in a multi-million dollar illegal DVD manufacturing and distribution operation within the GTA.
During the last week, RCMP used search warrants to explore a Markham residence and six business booths at three flea market locations across the GTA.
During the searches, officers discovered and seized 100,000 counterfeit DVDs (some of which were of films still playing in theatres), 114 DVD burners, as well as $5,600 in cash. Tens of thousands of packaging materials like plastic sleeves and jewel cases were also taken, as well as blank DVDs.
YuQian Fang (32), Lan Qin Chen (49), Zifan Chen (23), Ting Zhuang (28), Shuting Wang (24) and Jian Qing Xie (65) have all been charged with fraud, possession of property obtained by crime and possession of property obtained by crime for purpose of trafficking.
The accused will make their first court appearance on August 24 at the Brampton courthouse.
The investigation, says the RCMP, is ongoing.
