The online rumour mill is heavy this week, as several sites are reporting that Apple is poised to host an event on September 12 to introduce the iPhone 5 and a miniature version of the iPad.

Apple has yet to confirm or deny these rumours, but it could be time for its loyal customers to grease up the lawn chairs, plan a portable lunch and outline routes to the nearest Apple Store.

Belief is that the fifth incarnation of the iPhone could feature a thinner, yet larger screen as well as a smaller dock connector.

Meanwhile, it is being suggested that the smaller version of the iPad could feature a display that's 7"-8" diagonally, as opposed to the typical 9.7" form factor. It is not expected to have a Retina display.
