Thin Is In At Nikon

Nikon Canada is preparing to introduce eight new COOLPIX point-and-shoot compact digital cameras this March, that include a new Performance-series model based on a "backside CMOS sensor," four Style-series and three Life-series designs.

Feeding the 10.3 MP backside CMOS sensor on the SLR-style COOLPIX P100 bridge camera (available in black at C$449.95 MSRP) is a 26:1 zoom (26mm to 678mm, 35mm eq.). Nikon says the new sensor enables high-speed shooting at 10 frames per second (fps) at full resolution; and improved low-light image quality.

It also permits an in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) function that merges images of the same scene to achieve a single image with a broader range of tonal detail. Obviously, a stable camera and scene combination is necessary to avoid blurry effects in this mode.

Similarly, a Night Landscape mode combines a series of consecutive shots taken into a single image, with reduced noise. There's also a 1080p video mode with stereo sound recording, and a dedicated button to instantly enter video capture mode.

To capture sports scenes involving rapid movement, or for analyzing a golf swing, the P100 has a high-speed Sport Continuous Mode that operates at a dizzying 120 fps at lower resolution (1.1 MP).

Other features include a 3" Vari-angle 460,000-dot "Clear Colour Display" LCD; EVF; "five-way" hybrid VR Image Stabilization; Mode Dial; Nikon's Active D-Lighting and Smart Portrait System; Subject Tracking; and Scene Auto Selector Mode.

Another new Nikon SLR-style design, the 12 MP COOLPIX L110 ($279.95; black or red) comes with a 15:1 zoom that ranges from a wide 28mm through 420mm. Nikon says it's very power-efficient, and specifies 840-still images/7-hour HD video (720p) running time on a fresh set of four AA Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries (included with the camera). Of course, you can also use rechargeables.

Additional features include 3" 460k-dot LCD; five-way VR Image Stabilization; Smart Portrait System; and Scene Auto Selector.

The 14.2 mega-pixel COOLPIX S8000 qualifies as a Superzoom with its 10:1 lens (30mm to 300mm): at 27.3mm thick (just over an inch), Nikon says it's the thinnest in its class. Its HD capture mode is 720p at 30 fps (with stereo). It also features a 3" 921,000-dot Clear Colour Display LCD.

Nikon offers the "Creative Slider" as "a fun new way to apply effects when shooting in Auto Mode": brightness, saturation, and hue can be adjusted using the Rotary Multi Selector, while the user monitors the effects on the camera's LCD. Advanced Flash Control ramps up the ISO for more natural flash-lit images.

Other features include high (3200) ISO; "four-way" VR Image Stabilization; fast start-up; Sport Continuous Mode (approx. 3 fps for 45 frames at 3MP); Subject Tracking; Scene Auto Selector Mode; and Nikon's Smart Portrait System.

The COOLPIX S8000 will be available in black, red and bronze at $339.95.

The 14.2 MP COOLPIX S6000 ($279.95; black or red) is even thinner at only 25mm in depth (1"). Even so, it packs a 7:1 zoom lens (30-210mm), 2.7" 230k-dot Clear Colour Display LCD, and offers 720p video.

Other features include four-way VR Image Stabilization; ultra-fast start-up (approx. 0.75 sec.); 3 fps Sport Continuous Mode (for 45 frames at 3 MP); Advanced Flash Control; Subject Tracking; Scene Auto Selector Mode; and Smart Portrait System.

Heading down the S-line, the 12 MP COOLPIX S4000 (available in black, red, or pink) offers touch operation for $199.95 via a 3", 460k-dot Clear Colour Display LCD. Touch features include "Touch Shutter" by which users take the shot by touching an image of a person or object on the screen. The camera makes sure that subject is properly exposed and sharp. Subject Tracking is also invoked this way.

Other COOLPIX S4000 features include 4:1 zoom; ISO 3200; 720p video; four-way VR Image Stabilization; Scene Auto Selector Mode; and Smart Portrait System.
The leader ($169.95) S-series design, the COOLPIX S3000 comes in the widest range of colours: black, blue, green, or orange.

It's also the thinnest at 19mm (0.8"), but the 12 MP cameras comes with a 4:1 zoom; and offers ISO 3200; four-way stabilization; Subject Tracking; Scene Auto Selector Mode; and Smart Portrait System.

The COOLPIX L22 (black, blue, or red) and L21 ("champagne silver" or pink) L21 are leader designs, coming in at $129.95 and $99.95, respectively. They're powered by a pair of AA roundcells (included); and offer 3.6:1 zoom lens, three-way VR Image Stabilization, Smart Portrait System, and Easy Auto Mode. The former has a 12 MP sensor and a 3", 230k-dot LCD; the latter an 8 MP sensor and 2.7" 230k-dot display.

Nikon Canada offers a two-year warranty for all COOLPIX digital cameras purchased from an Authorized Nikon Canada Dealer.
