Walmart Canada has confirmed that it plans on completing at least 73 related expansion projects in the company's current fiscal year, which runs from February 1, 2012 to January 31, 2013.
The projects will include building new stores and expanding, as well as relocating existing stores. Most of the 39 former Zellers stores that Walmart Canada purchased the leasehold rights to, will reopen as Walmarts this fiscal year.
All told, 4.6 million square feet of retail space will be added, and the company will be investing $750 million into said projects. Walmart also notes that these expansion projects will generate more than 14,000 store, trade, and construction jobs.
As of the end of January, Walmart Canada had 333 stores, including 164 Supercentres, which sell a full range of grocery products, and general merchandise.
