LG Electronics' pre-CES press conference had loads of pizzazz. Highlights included a 55" OLED HDTV that's weighs 7.5kg and is 4mm deep, an 84" ultra-definition television, and new Cinema Screen LED-backlit LCDs with a bezel that's only 1mm wide (and the TV is only 28mm thick).
Dr. Scott Ahn, Chief Technology Officer for LG, said LG would emphasize larger, more immersive screens in 2012, offering models in 55", 60", 72" and 84" sizes. The 84" UD model uses new Nano Full LED technology, in which LEDs are embedded into the panel, making it smaller while retaining all the advantages of true backlighting.
LG has improved its Smart TV platform, which now has 1,200 apps, and Cinema 3D passive technology on its 2012 sets, Ahn said. LG is incorporating gesture control and voice recognition for text input into its Smart TV platform, Ahn stated. An optional 3D camera will provide support for gesture control like hand motions and full-body videogames, while the new Magic Remote S will allow for voice input.
LG has developed its own chipset for use on premium TVs. The new L9 chipset features a quad-core graphics processor, and offers improved 3D performance, upconversion and smoothness compared to off-the-shelf chipsets, Ahn stated.
LG's Smart TV platform will be offered on over half of the 2012 lineup, and the company will also have a couple of models with Google TV. There will also be models with Mobile High Definition Link, for streaming from MDL-capable mobile devices; and Wi-Di, for streaming from Wi-Di-equipped notebooks.
LG also announced new networked appliances. Users will be able to enter food information on LG's new networked fridges on LCD panels on the door, or by scanning grocery receipts. The fridge will be able to display recipes based on ingredients you have on hand, and upload cooking instructions to a networked LG range.
These network features don't always work as brilliantly in real life as they do during a manufacturer's demo, so it will be interesting to try the new appliances when they come to market.
But one of the coolest features doesn't depend on networking at all. Blast Chiller, offered on a new 31-cubic-foot French door fridge, can chill a can of pop in five minutes from room temperature, LG says, or a bottle of wine in eight minutes.
