Apple has reduced the price of the DRM-free, 256 kbps AAC encoded tunes in its iTunes Plus library from $1.29 to $0.99. This catalogue, although not as large as the "regular" iTunes catalogue, includes over two million tracks from labels like EMI, as well as artists from Sub Pop, Nettwerk, Beggars Group, IODA, and The Orchard.
Bell Adds DRM-free iPod & Mobile Phone Compatible Tracks to Sympatico/MSN Music Store
On October 2, Bell Canada announced the availability of unrestricted MP3 music files on Sympatico/MSN Music Store musicstore.sympatico.msn.ca where Canadians can purchase tracks playable on a wide range of compatible music and mobile devices, including iPod and MP3-enabled mobile phones. Downloaders can choose between WMA and MP3 files that "will retail for the same price as DRM-enabled albums, while single tracks cost as little as 99 cents."
Rhapsody to Acquire Napster
On-demand music service Rhapsody has reached an agreement to acquire Napster, a unit of consumer electronics retailer, Best Buy Co. As part of the deal, Rhapsody will take ownership of Napster's subscribers.
